The person behing @60s70s_lover obviously enjoys everything from those two decades; from fashion to The Beatles, Jane Birkin, music festivals and much more, but unlike others, Joy loves to wear clothing from that time and she has an Instagram store where you can purchase all vintage goods.

Hello, can you tell us what inspired you to make this account?

I really liked old fashioned things when I was younger. I loved the poodle skirts and red lipstick from the '50s, but didn't know much else about 'retro', but after I heard about the '60s and the '70s (and after following several accounts from those periods), I was absolutely in love so, I created this account in September 2016. I believe to post some of my favorite pictures and to learn more about those periods.

So, the '60s and the '70s are your favorite decades. Can you decide between them which is better?

Difficult question. A couple of months ago, I would've definitely said the early-mid '60s. I absolutely love The Beatles and British Mod culture! But at the moment, I'm definitely more into the late '60s and early '70s when it comes to fashion and music. But to answer your question, '60s! Just because I believe that was such a revolutionary period on so many levels and has really formed the world today.

I agree it was revolutionary, who is your favorite Beatle?

Great question! I think at first, Paul, but now I love all of them equally. I also don't have a celebrity crush on them or anything. They just kinda feel like 'my babies' haha.

Yeah, I understand. Did they influence your fashion style as well?

I'm not sure if their fashion style influenced me, but I definitely owe a big part of my love and appreciation for the '60s to The Beatles. Through them, I first learned about Mod culture and that definitely influenced my fashion style. Lots of colours, eye makeup, bangs, gogo boots and just the overall girly-vibe is really my style.

I see you own a lot of vintage clothes and sell them. Where do you get all those pieces?

Thrift shores, mostly. There's one around the corner which sells its clothes for about €3-7 max so, that's amazing! Still, it's hard to find really cool stuff, though. Once in a while I visit a vintage market here in Amsterdam, there's one stall in particular where students sell second-hand clothes for €5 a piece and I've got some really cool plaid skirts from there!
I also buy clothes at more 'popular' stores like H&M, Bershka, Pull and Bear, Primark and the New Yorker. H&M has some really great floral blouses for example, and I got a really cool beret at Primark recently!
Oh, and when vintage clothes are too big for me (which they usually are), I just use the sewing machine to make them smaller/tighter.

That sounds like a great style! Who is your style icon of those decades?

Oh, there are many. I think almost every single person on my feed has inspired me somehow. If I had to choose when it comes to the '60s, I'd have to say Twiggy, Jane Birkin and Pattie Boyd. They are all so cute! And I don't have many inspirations for the '70s; I usually look at movies, series or beauty ads for inspo.

Oh, there are true style icons! Can you list some of your favorite Instagram accounts that inspire you?

  • I absolutely love @crimsonandclover_'s style. She's probably the first '60s inspried blogger I started following.
  •  @_jemmawade is also adorable and has an amazing style! I was absolute thrilled to see that she started following me.
  • @thekaleidoscopeeyes is amazing. She's super sweet and also has amaaazing feed. She deserves more followers!
  • @loverofthepast has just really cool pictures. I can't quite describe it, but her posts always look perfect. It's pretty hard to find a good quality, but somehow she manages to pull it off. She doesn't have only perfect posts, but she's also super sweet!
There are definitely more accounts that deserve attention, but these are the ones that come to my mind.

Those accounts look great. What do you think of '60s and '70s movies?

I'll have to admit, I'm not a great fan of '60s movies. I don't really know why, but I think the '70s have some great classics! I think my favorite genre/era would be '90s/early 2000s romcoms. 10 Things I Hate About You is my favorite.

I feel the same! Do you like any modern stars or only vintage one?

Mostly the vintage ones. If I have to be honest, I think most popular stars at this moment are kinda trying too hard to stand out. I think celebrities from the past were more themselves, if you know what I mean. That's how they stood out. If I had to name a few I'd have to say Zooey Deschanel, Anne Hathaway and Scarlett Johansson.

So, when you go shopping for vintage clothes, what piece of clothing or accessorize do you particulary look for?

I usually don't look for anything. I never know what I'll find. Sometimes I've had these 'missions' to find flared jeans or striped shirts for example, but usually I look at pieces with interesting colours, patterns and materials and take them to the fitting room. If there's a particular piece which I can't find in local thrift stores, I usually look for them online!

That sounds great. If you could be any celebrity from the '60s and the '70s for one day and go back in that time, who would you be?

Oh, that's a really good question! I'd probably say a musician. Maybe one of the Beatles or a front man of a band playing at music festivals. Imagine what an experience that would be, playing at such large festival... Just being able to experience everyday city-life would be amazing, too!

Oh, I'd love that... And are there any things about those two decades that you don't like?

I think it would be the interest in spirituality, Buddhism and Hinduism in the late '60s. And I'm also not in favour of drug use. I'm quite down to Earth person so, those things are not really my thing.

Yeah, some people that love those times tend to use drugs and romanticise them. It's good you aren't one of them. Who do you think was a person that completely changed those times or maybe more than one?

Definitely, the Beatles (again haha). Their music was revolutionary and I don't think any of the bands exisiting now would've existed without them. Imagine a world without the Bee Gees, Oasis or the Arctic Monkeys... ouch. But not only their music influenced life of today, also just their style and overall attidute. I love watching clips where they react to reporters and paparazzi!

And that would be it, thank you for participating in this interview, I really enjoyed it.
